Five former British Prime Ministers have been Officers of the Union: Gladstone, Lord Salisbury, Herbert Asquith, Harold Macmillan and Edward Heath. Many others have been Cabinet Ministers, including in recent times such figures as Lord Hailsham, Tony Benn, Gerald Kaufman, Michael Heseltine and William Hague.

Other world figures who have been involved in the Union include Benazir Bhutto, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, who was Union President in 1977; and literary and broadcasting figures such as Tariq Ali, Dennis Potter, William Rees-Mogg, Sir Robin Day, Brian Walden, Jeffrey Archer and Jeremy Isaacs.
