Oxford Union Debating Sponsorship

The Oxford Union is the world’s largest and most famous debating society as well as the University of Oxford’s central student venue. Each week during term, the Union holds a debate in its Victorian debating chamber – the largest such purpose-built hall in the world.

We are also home to some of the world’s best student debaters. The Union has been European Champions for three out of the last four years and, at this is this year's World Champions.

We compete regularly on the domestic circuit as well, with victories this year including competitions in Cambridge, Bristol, Dublin, Limerick and London. We send an average of six speakers to each competition, choosing them from a pool of over one hundred Union debaters. Domestic competitions are smaller than their international counterparts, but regularly attract over one hundred competitors. Our own competition saw over ninety teams enter last year, with two individuals per team.

To maintain our position within University debating, we run an intensive program of in house training and competition. Four internal competitions are held every year for all Union. These competitions have well over one hundred participants every year and are accompanied by a program of workshops, which take place every Sunday evening during term time.

Sponsorship Proposal – Workshops and Internal Competitions

The four internal competitions hosted by the Union are:

Michaelmas Term – Autumn	The Freshers Competition
Hilary Term – Spring	The Bell Trophy Pairs Competition
Hilary Term – Spring	The Richard O’Sullivan Memorial Debater of the Year Competition
Trinity Term – Summer	The Moynihan Plate College Pairs Competition

Each competition has a similar format with preliminary rounds spread over several weeks followed by a final in which the top eight speakers take part. However, each competition has its own distinctive atmosphere. These competitions have well over one hundred participants every year and are accompanied by a program of workshops, which take place every Sunday evening during term time. The competition sponsorship would include sponsorship of the complimentary workshop sessions.

Sponsorship Proposal – External Competitions

The Oxford Union debating team competes every term at Universities across the country and the world. We attend over thirty domestic and Irish Competitions, and send teams to the European and World Championships. Our success at these competitions is unparalleled, and we have an established reputation among the debaters of most international Universities.

Benefits of sponsorship

• Corporate Logos and names on all competition related media. This includes a newsletter, which goes out to well over four hundred Oxford Students, the Oxford Union term card, which goes out to thirteen thousand students, and our web site.
