Life Membership



All matriculated students of Oxford University are eligible for life membership of the Oxford Union.

To join, just bring two passport photos, University card, and payment (cash, cheque, credit or debit card) to the Union's General Office. They will make you up a membership card there and then.



  • Life membership  £190
  • Access Scheme (For those receiving a goverment maintenance grant of £1,450 or more)  £138


Open Period  (Between 1st and 18th October 07)

During Freshers' Open Period, life membership is discounted for applications received by 5pm Thursday 2nd Week.  Thus:

  • Life membership  £170
  • Access Scheme  (For those receiving a government maintenance grant of £1,450 or more)  £99

All those eligible for life membership are detailed under Standing Order F6 (Rules of the Union)



Temporary Membership

If you are not a matriculated member of Oxford University and do not fall within the criteria outlined in Standing Order F5, then you might be eligible for either long term or termly membership.  The staff in the General Office will be happy to advise you about this.


1. Long-Term Membership

Institutions eligible for long-term membership e.g. Oxford Brookes University, are detailed under Standing Order F7 (a)


  • For those taking courses lasting three years or more: £190
  • For those taking courses lasting two years, or with two years remaining: £143

  • For those taking courses lasting one year or less, or with one year or less remaining: £95



2. Termly Membership

Institutions eligible for termly membership are detailed under Standing Order F7 (b)


  • 1 term:    £95

  • 2 terms: £143

  • 3 terms: £190



3. Educational Membership

Access to the educational facilities only are available to any member of the University of Oxford, on payment of a fee.  Please contact the Bursar for details.



Residential Membership

If you are not a member of the University but you are living in or near Oxford, you can apply to the Secretary for residential membership. The Standing Committee will consider your application and arrange for you to be interviewed. Residential membership is granted to people whose admission would, in the opinion of Standing Committee, benefit the Society.

  • £190 on joining and for first year, and a subsequent annual subscription of £95

(Only 100 residential members can be elected in a year)
