Conservation

Over the years the condition of the books in the historic collection has deteriorated. The leather bindings have dried out and often the front and back covers have become detached. The pages become brittle and tear easily. And without proper conservation, every time the books are used the damage gets worse.

Your gift will enable a book to be re-bound, cleaned and the covers re-attached. The spine will be repaired and re-lettered so that the book is easily identifiable on the shelf.  Once the conservation work has been completed the book will be added to the Library catalogue and a note will be added to the catalogue record to acknowledge your donation.

We know that our Library’s historic collection is of interest to researchers. We know that when books are added to the Library catalogue their usage increases – by a staggering eight to ten times. Through your generous gift as an adopter, you have ensured that not only does another book in the Union Library collection become “visible” on the catalogue and available to researchers, but that as its usage increases, the book will be healthy and robust enough to survive it.
