This House Believes Social Media Undermines Good Journalism
Just as ‘fake news’ and clickbait, questionable news sources fill our social media with unverified and misleading stories. As traditional media outlets try to respond and reach a bigger audience through social media, have they pursued likes and retweets at the expense of the journalistic quality readers expect?
Speakers in Proposition:
Damian Collins MP - As Chairman of the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee, he leads the parliamentary inquiry into the 'growing phenomenon of fake news'
Steven Erlanger - The London bureau chief for the New York Times, he previously served as bureau chief in Europe, Russia, the Middle East and Southeast Asia
Speakers in Opposition:
Ben Smith - The Editor-in-Chief of Buzzfeed, he is a prominent political journalist described by The Hollywood Reporter as one of the most powerful people in the media today
Adam Boulton - The Editor-at-Large of Sky News, he also is the presenter of All Out Politics & Week in Review, having previously served as political editor
Prior to this debate, the Emergency Debate will be held at 7.45pm on a motion to be decided
With many thanks to the following who have generously donated floor prizes for the Main Debate:
