The House Believes The Decline and Fall of The European Union is Upon Us

The world has paid much attention to Britain’s future outside the European Union, but what of the EU’s future?  How will this monolithic institution respond to the challenges it faces, from debt repayment to the refugee crisis?  Will these problems divide the EU to the point of collapse, or will it emerge from these testing times stronger than ever?

Speakers in Proposition:

  • Theo Paphitis  -  As the owner of Ryman, Robert Dyas and Boux Avenue, he boasts an impressive business empire that spans property, retail and finance.  He was a Dragon on the BBC's Dragon's Den for nine series
  • Thierry Baudet  -  A Dutch politician and journalist who founded the political party 'Forum for Democracy', he is known for his strong eurosceptic stance, and is an outspoken supporter of the nation state
  • Bim Afolami MP  -  British Conservative Party politician, he has been the Member of Parliament for Hitchin and Harpenden constituency since winning the seat in the 2017 general election

Speakers in Opposition:

  • Anna Soubry MP  - Conservative MP for Broxtowe and former Minister of State.  She is a vocal advocate for the EU, and came second in 'Leave',  EU's 'Remoaner of the Year' Awards
  • Paddy Ashdown  -  The Leader of the Liberal Democrats from 1988 to 1999, he served as High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina and as Chair of the Liberal Democrat General Election Committee
  • Sir Julian King  -  The European Commissioner for the Security Union, he has served as Ambassador to Ireland, Ambassador to France and Director General of the Northern Ireland Office
