Chinese Dissident

One of the most active voices in support of democracy worldwide, Dan was imprisoned for his leading role in the Tianenmen Square protests of 1989.  He was arrested again in 1995 after further campaigning for democracy, and was charged with plotting to overthrow the government and given an eleven year sentence.  He was released in 1998 for medical reasons and sent to the US.  He has remained a vocal supporter of democracy in China, and received his PhD from Harvard University
