This House Would Start A New Cold War With China

With China engaging in ever-greater brinkmanship at home and abroad, is the west's policy of accommodation and cooperation towards China sufficient for this new era, or is it time for a moore robust approach?

SPEAKERS IN PROPOSITION:

  • Anastasia Lin  :  Chinese-Canadian actress, beauty queen and human rights advocate. She was ruled persona non grata by China in 2015 for her advocacy.
  • Dr Michael Pillsbury  :  American Director of the Center of Chinese Strategy. He is the author of multiple books about China, and one of President Trump's top advisors on China.

SPEAKERS IN OPPOSITION:

  • Michael Fuchs  :  U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, from 2013 to 2016. He previously advised Hilary Clinton on foreign policy.
  • Dr Kerry Brown  :  Academic and former First Secretary at the British Embassy in Beijing, China. He is now Director of the Lau China Institute at KCL.

Special Attention Notice:

Two Private Business Motions are to be brought before the House on Thursday 6th February 2020 which Standing Committee has deemed of such importance that they should be brought to the special attention of Members. The Motions are as follows:

(1) To replace Rules 33 through 35 inclusive and Standing Orders D2 through D14 inclusive, which lay down all aspects of the administration and conduct of the Society’s Main Elections each term, including Electoral Malpractice, the Poll, the Count, Election Tribunals and seniority.

(2) To replace Rules 39 through 48 inclusive, 67 through 69 inclusive, and 73; Standing Orders A18, B2, B3, E11 and E14; and the Special Schedule of Forms of the House; which lay down the proper conduct of Business Meetings, debates and Motions; Poll procedures; Rules, Standing Orders, Special Schedules, and protections and interpretations thereof; and the Forms of the House.
