Description

This House believes we have nothing to fear but fear itself.

In Proposition:
  • Sharmi Chakrabarti has been Director of Liberty since 2003. A fierce advocate of Civil Liberties and Human Rights, she famously demanded a full written apology from Andrew Burnham MP after he associated her with David Davis, and came second in the C4 Political Awards for Most Inspiring Political Figure.
  • Peter Hitchens is an author and journalist who currently writes for The Mail on Sunday. He has written from across the world, covering the collapse of Communism and US politics. A moral and cultural conservative, he sees the best guarantee of liberty as a society governed by conscience and the rule of law.
  • Dominic Grieve MP studied at Magdalen and was President of OUCA.  Elected in 1997, he was promoted to the position of Shadow Home Secretary earlier this year.  He was an instrumental part of opposition to the Government’s scheme to detain terrorist suspects for up to 90 days without charge.

In Opposition
  • Tim Spicer is the CEO of Aegis Defence Services, having had a full career in the British Army, where he developed extensive knowledge of intelligence, counter terrorism, protective security and media relations.  Since forming Aegis in 2001, he has been a significant contributor to the debate over the industry’s global contribution to government security initiatives.
  • Jonah Goldberg is certainly not afraid of controversy.  An American conservative commentator and author, his recent work has reached Number 1 on the New York Times Bestseller list.  He writes on liberty and is a critic of the values of liberals and democrats - and a vocal supporter of the Iraq War.
