Graydon Carter has been editor of Vanity Fair for almost 18 years. Under his editorship, the magazine has won 11 National Magazine Awards, including 2 for general excellence for magazines with a circulation of more than one million—the highest honor in magazine publishing. Carter has been named Advertising Age’s editor of the year and is the first editor to be twice named Adweek magazine’s editor of the year. Before joining Vanity Fair, Carter was the editor of The New York Observer, which he completely revamped. He came to the Observer from Spy magazine, which he co-founded in 1986, having worked as a staff writer for Time and Life. Carter has also worked as a producer on a number of acclaimed documentaries including The Kid Stays in the Picture, Surfwise, and Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson. He was an executive producer of 9/11, for which he won an Emmy Award and a Peabody Award. Carter is the author of What We’ve Lost (2004), a comprehensive examination of the Bush administration, and editor of several books, including Vanity Fair Portraits (2008), Oscar Night (2004) and the bestselling Vanity Fair’s Hollywood (2000). Carter owns two iconic New York City restaurants: the Waverly Inn, in the West Village, and the Monkey Bar, on the Upper East Side. The father of five, he resides in Greenwich Village. |
