Description

Sir John Major is a pre-eminent Conservative statesman, having served not only as Prime Minister between 1990-1997, but also as Foreign Secretary and Chancellor of the Exchequer.

On becoming Prime Minister, Sir John Major inherited a weak economy and a divided Party.  His immediate task was to lead the UK's effort in the first Gulf War.

In 1992, Sir John secured an unprecedented fourth term victory for the Conservatives (with the most votes ever received before or since in British history).

As Prime Minister, Sir John focused his efforts upon securing peace in Northern Ireland and upholding Britain's position in the world community as a political, social and economic leader.

When Labour won the General Election in May 1997, he handed over one of the strongest economies any incoming Government had inherited.  Since retiring from active politics, Sir John has taken on various business appointments, as well as being actively engaged in a number of charitable organisations.  He has also published a book on cricket, one of his enduring passions.
