The Mayor of London from 2000 until 2008, Ken Livingstone has been characterised by Margaret Thatcher’s biographer as “the only truly successful left-wing British politician of modern times”. During his tenure as Mayor, he introduced initiatives such as the Oyster Card and the Congestion Charge, and strove to improve the rights of women, the LGBTQIA+ community, and ethnic minorities, though he has been accused by some of cronyism and anti-semitism.
