Democratic Allies Debate

  • Event Start: 25th January 2018, 8:30pm
  • Event Type:

This House Believes Democracies Should Never Ally With Authoritarian Regimes

All democracies face the question of whether to ostracise unsavoury regimes or work with them in their mutual strategic interest.  Can political reform be fostered through such alliances, or do they merely prop up oppressive elites?

Speakers in Proposition:

  • Prof Arthur Mutambara : Former Deputy Prime Minister of Zimbabwe and a leader of the Movement for Democratic Change, which opposes the governing regime
  • Ana Gomes MEP : An MEP since 2004, she previously represented Portugal at the UN and worked on the East Timor peace process

Speakers in Opposition:

  • Gabrielle Rifkind : An expert in conflict resolution in the Middle East, she focuses her work on Iran and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict
  • Paul Wolfowitz : President of the World Bank form 2005 to 2007, he previously served as US Ambassador to Indonesia, and as Deputy Secretary of Defense

Prior to this debate, the Emergency Debate will be held at 7.45pm on a motion to be decided at this week's Consultative Committee
