Churchill Debate

  • Event Start: 17th May 2018, 8:30pm
  • Event Type:

This House Believes Britain Should Be Ashamed of Churchill

Considered by many to be the greatest Prime Minister in history, recent years have seen a growing revisionism of Sir Winston Churchill's legacy through a focus on his fatal mismanagement of Bengal and openly racist sentiments.  Can we reconcile these conflicting identities of a wartime hero and rabid imperialist within so complex a figure?

Speakers in Proposition:

  • Prof John Charmley : Professor of History at the University of East Anglia and author of Churchill: The End of Glory
  • Dr Rahul Rao : Senior Lecturer in Politics at SOAS and a former Rhodes Scholar
  • Lowkey : Kareem Dennis is a British-Iraqi hip-hop artist based in London

Speakers in Opposition:

  • Sir Nicholas Soames MP: Conservative MP for Mid Sussex since 1983 and grandson of Sir Winston Churchill
  • Gisela Stuart: Chairwoman of the Vote Leave Campaign Committee, and former MP
  • Sonia Purnell : Political reporter and author of First Lady: The Life & Wars of Clementine Churchill and Just Boris: A Tale of Blond Ambition

Prior to this debate, the Emergency Debate will be held at 7.45pm on a motion to be decided at this week's Consultative Committee
