This House Believes Ireland is Ready for Reunification

Twenty years on fro the Good Friday Agreement, government in Northern Ireland is at a standstill.  Partisan politics have strengthened, not soothed, sectarian divisions, and a settlement becomes less likely by the day.  In this context, the United Kingdom's impending departure from the EU has triggered a renewed focus on that question which has shaped an island's history - has the time come for a united Ireland?  The Oxford Union is proud to host this historic debate between leaders North and South of the border

Speakers in Proposition:

  • Colum Eastwood MLA  :  Leader of the Social Democratic & Labour Party (SDLP) and former Mayor of Derry
  • Micheál Martin TD  :  Leader of the Opposition in Ireland and Leader of Fianna Fáil since 2011
  • Joan Burton TD  :  Ireland's former Deputy Prime Minister and Leader of the Labour Party between 2014 and 2016

Speakers in Opposition:

  • Mike Nesbitt MLA  :  Former leader of the Ulster Unionist Party from 2012 to 2017
  • Claire Sugden MLA  :  Served as Minister of Justice in the devolved Northern Irish Executive
  • Richard Humphreys  :  Judge of the Irish High Court and an author on Irish unity

Prior to this debate, Officer Hustings will be held at 7.45pm ahead of the Union's Elections the following day
