  • Event Start: 21st February 2019, 8:30pm
  • Event Type:

This House Believes The Left Must Reclaim Populism

‘Populist’ is a term used to smear the nationalist, authoritarian Right. But today, social democratic parties, preoccupied with technocratic government, fail to engage with the voters' real grievances. As politicians from Bernie Sanders to Jeremy Corbyn surge in popularity but fall short of power, does the Left need to learn from the populist Right?

Speakers in Proposition:

  • Jeff Weaver : Campaign manager for the 2016 Presidential campaign of US Senator Bernie Sanders
  • Paul Mason : British commentator and radio personality, he has written extensively on the direction of left politics
  • Brandon Davis : Campaign Manager for Florida's Democratic candidate for Governor, Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum

Speakers in Opposition:

  • George Papandreou : Prime Minister of Greece from 2009 to 2011, he is the current President of Socialist International
  • Lord Adonis : British Labour Party politician, academic and journalist who served in the Labour Government for five years.  He is a key proponent of a second referendum on British departure from the EU
