This House Believes The Catholic Church Can Never Pay For Its Sins

The Catholic Church has overseen decades of physical violence, neglect, and sexual abuse. As the institution struggles to atone for this record, its efforts have included the funding of health, housing and counselling for survivors. But given the gravity of its abuses, can any measures ever be enough?

  • Mitchell Garabedian : Lawyer who represented sexual abuse victims in Boston during the Catholic priest sexual abuse scandal, portrayed by Stanley Tucci in the movie Spotlight
  • Elizabeth Coppin : Confined in three Magdalene laundries from the age of 15, she is now bringing a case against the Irish state to the United Nations committee against Torture
  • Thomas Reilly: Former Massachusetts Attorney General, he led the investigation into the clergy sexual abuse scandal in Boston

Speakers in Opposition:

  • Marci Hamilton : CEO and Academic Director at CHILD USA, an interdisciplinary think tank that works to prevent child abuse and neglect
  • Dr Jay R Feierman : Former psychiatric colnsultant to the clerical sexual offender treatment programme in Jemez Springs, New Mexico
