In recent years, demagogues have come to power in democracies across the globe.  With populism on the rise, are we immune from this worldwide trend towards authoritarianism, or might we be next?

Speakers in Proposition:

  • The Rt Hon Lord Kenneth Baker  :  Former Home Secretary and Chairman of the Conservative Party;  he now serves as a member of the House of Lords
  • Dr Sarah Mendelson  :  US Ambassador to the Economic & Social Council at the UN under Obama, and expert on democracy and human rights

Speakers in Opposition:

  • Prof AC Grayling  :  British philosopher and writer;  in his book Democracy & Its Crisis, he explores the conflict between democracy and authoritarian populism
  • Michael Abramowitz  :  President of Freedom House, an NGO dedicated to researching and promoting democratic change;  he previously worked at The Washington Post
