This House Is Not Proud To Be British

This Black History Month follows a summer of reckoning with racist and colonial histories by nations and institutions alike.  Is it possible to fight against racism in all its forms, while taking pride in being British?

Speakers in Proposition:

  • Femi Nylander  :  Activist, prominent in Oxford causes including Rhodes Must Fall and racial profiling by Oxford colleges
  • Arike Oke  :  Managing Director of the Black Cultural Archives, a national heritage centre dedicated to the histories of African and Caribbean people in Britain
  • Magid Magid  :  Somali-British activist, writer, and politician.  He previously served as Lord Mayor of Sheffield and Green Party MEP for Yorkshire and the Humber

Speakers in Opposition:

  • Helen Grant MP  :  Conservative MP for Maidstone and the Weald.  She was the first black woman of mixed heritage to be elected as a Conservative MP
  • Dawn Butler MP  :  Labour MP for Brent Central.  She served as Shadow Secretary of State for Women and Equalities in Jeremy Corbyn’s Shadow Cabinet
  • Lord Dr Michael Hastings CBE  :  Former Global Head of Corporate Citizenship for KPMG and Head of Public Affairs at the BBC.  He sits as an independent peer in the House of Lords
