“Cancel culture” is the boycott of the 21st century.  To practitioners, cancel culture is a new way of holding public figures and even companies accountable for their actions.  But does cancel culture really facilitate the redemption of people?  Or does it simply encourage virtue signalling rather than enduring progress?  If so, does it truly justify the destruction of the reputation and livelihoods of public figures?

Speakers in Proposition:

  • Nick Buckley MBE  :  He came to national attention in June 2020, when he was sacked from the charity he founded, Mancunian Way, for criticising some of the aims of the Black Lives Matter organisation.  He was ultimately reinstated, and the Board resigned due to public pressure and the threat of legal action
  • Suzanne Nossel  :  Chief Executive of PEN America, a non-profit organisation that works to defend and celebrate free expression through the advancement of literature and human rights.  She has written on Cancel Culture in her book Dare To Speak: Defending Free Speech For All
  • Pippa Norris  :  A lecturer in Comparative Politics at the John F Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, she wrote the highly influential research paper Closed Minds? Is a Cancel Culture Stifling Academic Freedom & Intellectual Debate in Political Science?
  • Alex O’Connor  :  Current Oxford student and founder of the Cosmic Skeptic YouTube Channel that has over 300,000 subscribers.  His videos, blogs and podcasts promote the open discussion of philosophy and religion

Speakers in Opposition:

  • J C Hallman  :  Author of the famous article In Defence of Cancel Culture, published in the Columbia Journal.  His other works include publishing six non-fiction books, that cover a wide range of themes, including love and religion
  • Carmonghne Felix   :  Formerly Governor Andrew Cuomo’s official speechwriter, she was hired as the director of surrogates and strategic communications for Elizabeth Warren’s 2020 presidential campaign.  Her first full-length collection of poems, Build Yourself A Boat, was longlisted for the 2019 National Book Award for Poetry
