Every year, the Oxford Union begins the academic year with a famous and robust debate motion: This House Has No Confidence In Her Majesty’s Government.  COVID put paid to that, so in a twist we will put Her Majesty’s Most Loyal Opposition to the test.  Is Keir Starmer a potential Prime Minister-in-waiting?  Or, after 10 years of Conservative rule, are Labour still unelectable?  And what is the role of an official Opposition in the age of coronavirus?

Speakers in Proposition include:

  • Andrea Leadsom  :  Member of Parliament and runner-up in the 2016 contest to become Conservative Party Leader and Prime Minister.  She spent many years as a Government and Cabinet Minister, including as both Business Secretary and Leader of the House of Commons
  • Alex Stafford  :  The first Conservative to hold a seat at Rother Valley.  He is a member of the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Committee and previously worked at the World Wildlife Fund
  • Further speakers TBA

Speakers for the Opposition include:

  • Nick Thomas-Symonds  :  Shadow Home Secretary and Member of Parliament for Torfaen.  He previously served in the Shadow Home Office Team of Shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott as Shadow Minister of State for Security
